Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving invitations: designs, wording and RSVPs

A Thanksgiving invitation has a practical job. It tells everyone when to arrive, when dinner is served and what to bring, and it finds out how many people will be at the table. Here are free autumn designs and ready-to-copy wording for a family Thanksgiving dinner, a Friendsgiving, a potluck and a Thanksgiving lunch at work, plus short texts and RSVP lines.

What to put on a Thanksgiving invitation

Thanksgiving guests need more practical detail than most party guests. Dinner has a fixed time, the cook needs a headcount, and half the table may be bringing a dish. Put the warm words at the top and the facts underneath.

LineWhat it saysExample

7. ReplyHow and by when to RSVPPlease reply by November 16

Give two times when they differ. “Arrive at 2, dinner at 3” keeps early guests from hovering in the kitchen and late ones from missing the carving. If the meal is a potluck, say so on the invitation itself rather than in a later message, so nobody arrives empty-handed or with a third green bean casserole.

Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving? Choosing the tone

The same holiday covers very different gatherings. Decide which one you are hosting before you write the first line, because it changes the wording, the design and how formal the reply should be.

GatheringUsuallySounds like
Family Thanksgiving dinnerOn Thanksgiving Day, at home, with relatives of every age“Join us around the table this Thanksgiving.”
FriendsgivingThe weekend before or after, with friends, often a potluck“Friends, food and far too much pie.”
Potluck ThanksgivingAny of these, with each guest bringing a dish“We’ll carve the turkey. You bring the sides.”
Thanksgiving dinner partyA seated dinner for adults, often with wine“An evening of gratitude, good wine and a long table.”
Work or community ThanksgivingA lunch at the office, school, church or club“Our team Thanksgiving lunch is on Wednesday.”

Four Reponelle designs suit these gatherings, and each appears below next to the wording it fits best: Hearth & Home for a family dinner, Harvest Table (made for Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving) for a Friendsgiving, Sunday Table for a potluck and The Vineyard for a dinner party with wine. All of them are free, and any of them works for any of these meals.

Thanksgiving dinner invitation wording for family

A family Thanksgiving invitation can be warm and simple. Most guests already know the house; what they need is the time, what to bring and whether the new partners and the little cousins are invited too.

Friendsgiving invitation wording

Friendsgiving is Thanksgiving with the people you chose: roommates, old college friends, neighbors and colleagues far from home. It is usually more relaxed than the family meal, often a potluck, and often held on a weekend near the holiday so everyone can still travel home for Thursday.

Puns are welcome at Friendsgiving, but one is enough. The date, the time and what to bring matter more than the joke, so keep them plain on the lines below it.

Potluck Thanksgiving wording: asking guests to bring a dish

Most Thanksgivings are at least partly potluck. The trick is to say what you are cooking, ask what each guest will bring and give them one easy place to tell you, so the table ends up with a balance of sides, salads and pies.

The host cooks the turkey
We’re roasting the turkey and making the gravy. Please bring a side dish, a salad or a dessert to share.
Let guests choose
It’s a potluck! When you reply, write in the note which dish you’re bringing, so we don’t end up with five pies. (Although…)
By last name
Last names A to H: sides. I to P: salads and bread. Q to Z: desserts. We’ll cover the turkey and the drinks.
Asking one guest
In the message you send with the link: “Hi Dana! Could you bring your famous mashed potatoes? Your invitation is here: [link]”
Drinks only
No cooking needed. Just bring something to drink and a good appetite.
Dietary needs
Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you reply. There will be a vegetarian main.
Containers
Bring a container or two: leftovers are part of the deal.

On a Reponelle invitation every guest can add a note to their reply, so the dishes collect in your guest list next to the names. Explain the potluck in your welcome message and ask for the dish in the reply line.

Formal Thanksgiving dinner party wording

Some hosts turn Thanksgiving into a proper dinner party: a set table, a seating plan, a printed menu and a wine for every course. The wording can be more formal, and it should say clearly whether the evening is for adults.

If you are making a seating chart, ask for replies a little earlier, about two weeks before. Offer a plus-one only where you mean it: on Reponelle you choose whether the invitation allows one, and each guest can bring one person at most.

Thanksgiving lunch at work, school or church

A Thanksgiving lunch at the office, a class feast or a church supper needs a headcount just as much as a dinner at home, and busy guests rarely answer a group email. Keep the wording short and practical.

For a community supper, ask people to reply even if they are only coming for pie. A rough count is far better than none when you are deciding how many turkeys to roast.

Short Thanksgiving invitation texts and messages

Most Thanksgiving invitations now arrive by text, email or the family group chat. A short message should fit on a phone screen: one warm line, the date and time, and the link for everything else.

When to send Thanksgiving invitations

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year in the United States, so guests make their plans early. Send the invitation before they do.

WhenForWhy
4–6 weeks beforeRelatives who travelFlights and long drives are booked early, so tell them by mid-October.
3–4 weeks beforeA family dinner at home, FriendsgivingLate October or early November, before the holiday weekends fill up.
2–3 weeks beforeWork lunches and community suppersEnough notice for a busy calendar.
About 10 days beforeThe RSVP deadlineTime to order the turkey and plan the shopping: November 16 for dinner on the 26th.

Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday, November 26. Friendsgiving usually falls on the weekend before (November 21 and 22) or the weekend after (November 28 and 29). In Canada, Thanksgiving is on the second Monday of October, and the same wording works with the date changed.

RSVP wording for Thanksgiving invitations

The reply line decides how many chairs you set and how big a turkey you buy, so make it clear: how to reply, and by when.

Simple
Please RSVP by November 16.
Warm
Let us know by November 16 so we can save you a seat at the table.
Digital
Kindly reply by November 16 using your personal link.
Potluck
When you reply, tell us which dish you’re bringing.
With a plus-one
You’re welcome to bring one guest. Just tell us when you reply.
Families
Please reply once for your household and tell us in the note how many of you are coming.
Dietary needs
Any allergies or dietary needs? Tell us when you reply.
Regrets only
On a printed card: “Regrets only by November 16.” On a digital invitation, ask everyone to reply instead, so your headcount is right.

Sending a digital Thanksgiving invitation

A digital invitation does not have to fit everything on one card. Keep the main wording short and put the rest where guests look for it: the plan for the day in the programme (arrival, dinner, pie, the game), the dress code, a map link to your door and the reply form.

On Reponelle you choose a design, write your wording and create a personal link for each guest or household. You share the links yourself, by text, email or WhatsApp. Guests open the invitation in their browser, with no app or account, and reply going, maybe or declining, with one dietary choice and a note. Every reply arrives in your guest list, and if dinner moves from 3 to 4, you change it once and every link shows the new time.

Thanksgiving invitation questions

What should a Thanksgiving invitation say?

Who is hosting, the date, when to arrive and when dinner is served, the address, whether it is a potluck and what to bring, and the date you need replies by. A warm opening line, such as “Join us around the table”, sets the tone.

What is the difference between Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving?

Thanksgiving is usually the family meal on the fourth Thursday of November. Friendsgiving is a Thanksgiving-style meal with friends, often a potluck, held on a nearby weekend so guests can still spend the holiday itself with their families.

When should I send Thanksgiving invitations?

Three to four weeks before, so late October or early November for dinner on November 26. Give relatives who travel four to six weeks, and ask for replies about ten days before the meal.

How do I word a potluck Thanksgiving invitation?

Say what you are providing and what guests should bring, for example “We’ve got the turkey. Bring a side, a salad or a pie,” and ask each guest to tell you their dish when they reply, so the table stays balanced.

How do I write a funny Friendsgiving invitation?

Pick one pun and keep the details plain, for example “Let’s get basted! Friendsgiving at Jordan’s, Saturday, November 21, 7 pm. Turkey provided. Gravy jokes mandatory.”

Are Reponelle’s Thanksgiving invitations free?

Yes. Harvest Table and every other design, the animated opening, personal guest links and the RSVP list are free, with no payment details.

Can I send a Thanksgiving invitation by text or WhatsApp?

Yes. Create a personal link for each guest or household in your account, then copy it into a text, an email or any chat, or tap the Share on WhatsApp button next to it. Guests reply on the invitation itself, and every reply arrives in your account.

How do I invite a whole family with one invitation?

Send one personal link per household, address it to the family and ask them to write in the note how many of them are coming.

How do I ask about allergies and dietary needs?

Ask in the reply line. On Reponelle each guest can pick one dietary choice, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or halal, and add a note for allergies.

Can guests bring someone?

Only if you allow it. You choose whether the invitation offers a plus-one, and each guest can bring one person at most. For families, use one link per household instead.
